Several brush fires have broken out on Long Island, New York, with massive plumes of smoke seen billowing into the air from as far as Connecticut.
More than 40 fire departments are reportedly working to battle the fires which started in Suffolk County on Saturday afternoon. Multiple fires were reported near Sunrise Highway and Gabreski Airport in Westhampton and in the Pine Barrens. Parts of Sunrise Highway near Westhampton were closed.
The National Weather Service shared radar images of the smoke, saying northwesterly winds were blowing the plumes offshore further downstream.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the National Guard has been called in to assist. "The New York National Guard has already begun providing air support by helicopter and is coordinating with local law enforcement. I have also deployed personnel from the Office of Emergency Management, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Conservation, State Parks and the New York State Police to assist Suffolk County’s response to this crisis," she said.
The Fire Department of NY said it was currently operating at a brush fire in Gerritsen Beach, making water drops from the air.
